It’s been 5 months since this blog launched. I’ve been posting monthly as planned. There are a few takeaways that I’d like to share:
I’m a visual artist first and a writer second. While I don’t write every day, I do draw every day. Every. Single. Day!! This has been true for about two years now and I don’t see this changing any time soon.
My time and attention are my two most precious resources. To be clear, this isn’t something that I’ve just learned about. I’ve just come to a deeper understanding of it since this blogging experience began.
I’m okay with a “varying work flow”. November and December (so far) have been busier than normal. I just wrapped up filling out report cards for 504 students (For those of you who don’t know, I teach art in an elementary school). Because of this, and some other factors, the time I’ve had to write has been limited. This is why this month’s post is so brief. I’m cool with this.
Blogging has been a meaningful experience. I don’t know how to explain it without sounding too “fru-fru/artsy-fartsy”. Basically, I feel more intimately connected to the “artist experience” because I take the time, as limited as it is, to write about it.
Here are some thoughts/plans moving forward:
Write about what I’m currently creating. I regularly post images of works in progress on my Instagram account. I’ll do the same thing here (see image below). As I stated, I draw every day so it feels like this should be relatively easy for me to do. There are other topics that might require more of my time and attention to write about than what I can afford to spend in a single month, so I won't rush those posts.
Explore other online venues for my art. I started this blogging experiment because I wanted someplace other than Instagram/social media to get my art out into the world. While I can do that here, I’m wondering if there are better options. There are a couple websites I've discovered for posting a portfolio of my work and for selling my work. I want to investigate them and see if they're a good fit for me.
Look to the future. This is my 31rst year as an art teacher (32 if you count my year of substitute teaching). I plan on retiring at the end of this school year!!.... 😀 I’m sure I’ll have more to say about this major life transition on this blog at some point. For now, the process of envisioning what my life will look like once I leave this career behind me has already begun. What will my life as an artist look like when I leave my classroom for the last time? I'm excited to find out!
